English Original
"Hold the lid," Helena said.
She pressed her palm against the metal hatch. Dale stepped onto the flat roof carrying a wide tin of birdseed. Afternoon sun warmed the grey surface, and city sounds drifted upward in broken bursts. A thin breeze slipped between the railings and fluttered the corners of a striped picnic cloth. Warm tar smell mixed with distant car exhaust, covering the taste of dust in the air. Dale set the tin near the cloth, then placed a long scoop beside a deep ladle he had borrowed from the kitchen. Beside these he lowered a small telescope, its brass tube glinting as it balanced on folded legs.
He planned to refill the bird feeder fixed near the south railing. First he dipped the scoop into the seed and raised a rounded cupful toward the feeder’s mouth. The feeder hung higher than his shoulder, so he balanced on his toes. A gust slid across the roof and nudged the loose telescope. The tube rolled, gathered speed on the slight slope, and struck the ladle’s handle. Metal rang, the ladle flipped, and its heavy bowl clipped Dale’s wrist. Seed scattered like dry rain, pattering across tiles and skidding under a vent pipe.
Helena’s eyes widened; her shoulders lifted as silent laughter shook her frame. Dale rubbed his wrist and watched the seed draw curved lines across the roof. The loose trails built a rough narrative, a simple picture of loops and branching paths without plan. He crouched, tracing one arc with a fingertip, then decided the birds could enjoy the surprise pattern as it was. The rolled telescope settled against a raised tile, no longer moving. Above it, a cloud slid away from the sun, and fresh light settled over the quiet roof.
Translation
