English Original
The green bulb above the rusty faucet flickered, dropping quick shadows across the buckets. Joy dipped a palm in the warm rinse tub and felt tiny waves push against the enamel edge. The tub had stood in the corner for years, and its paint was chipped. For fun, she slapped the surface once, lightly. The tub rang like a hollow drum once. The sound bounced off tiled walls and crawled along a thin metal rack. Hangers rattled in reply, and a damp apron with specks of dried carrot garnish swung against her elbow. The sudden motion nudged a long sagging line. The rope bowed into a loose hammock between two steam pipes. Soapy drops pattered onto the tiles, spreading into a shallow floodplain that mirrored the striped light.
Joy lifted her eyebrows and tapped the tub again. She used a wooden spoon she found near the starch jar. The deeper tap sent a new vibration through the rack and down a copper pipe. A far spring inside the dusty recliner beside the door twanged. Its faint metallic echo joined the growing chorus. The earlier puddle slowed the echo, muffling lower tones yet letting sharp rings glide over the surface. She let out a short laugh and slid a lid partway over the tub. Water gurgled under the metal, and the pitch shifted upward; the air itself seemed to hum. Steam escaped from a washer vent and rolled across the floor. It glided over the puddle and hid her footprints. Drips from the ceiling struck the metal lid again and again. Each impact carried a fresh uneven beat through the foggy air.
Translation
