Six paces beyond the stable door, a low wooden stool stood beside a grain barrel. Hope, sleeves rolled to her elbows, balanced an apple slice on one palm while a young goat twitched its ears below her. She aimed to slip the slice onto the high window ledge, far from curious teeth. A broad beam crossed above, but the packed-earth floor dipped slightly near the barrel, so the stool already showed a faint lean. Warm straw smell mingled with faint tin at every breath, and a pale stripe of sun cut through floating chaff. Past the half-open door, an expansive vista of green pasture shimmered, yet the goat’s focus stayed on the lifted apple, certain the sweet treat belonged on its own tongue.

Hope set one foot onto the stool; the board sagged, and the goat brushed against a shovel propped nearby. Metal scraped, the handle slid, and fresh weight pressed the stool’s rear leg sideways. She twisted her hips to counter the tilt, yet the plank wobbled harder. The apple dropped, bounced off the barrel rim, and perched on its curved lid without falling. The goat stepped back in surprise, removing the sideways push, and the stool rocked forward again. Hope folded one corner of a loose canvas sack, tucked it beneath the front leg, and the tiny wedge steadied the platform for the moment. She lifted the apple again, but the goat wandered toward the straw pile that for any goat formed a private utopia. The stool stayed level yet unused. Straw continued to rustle under small hooves.

霍普把一隻腳踩上凳子；木板下陷，而山羊蹭到了旁邊支著的鏟子。金屬刮響，握柄滑動，新加的重量把凳子後腿向側面壓去。她旋轉臀部抵消傾斜，但踏板搖晃得更厲害。蘋果脫手，彈到桶沿，又停在弧形蓋子上而未掉下。山羊驚訝地後退，側向的推力消失，凳子再次向前晃回。霍普將一角鬆散的帆布袋折起，塞到前腿下，小小的楔子暫時穩住了平台。她再度舉起蘋果，但山羊已走向稻草堆，那處對任何山羊而言都是私人的烏托邦。凳子依舊平穩卻空著。細碎的草桿在小蹄下沙沙移動。
