A thin whistle slid through the half-open lab window. Each gust flicked across the quiet observation room, and sheets of tracing paper fluttered from their clips. Joy planned to inflate soap bubbles over a shallow tray and sketch the delicate rings before they burst. A bulbous rubber bellows stood at her elbow. Each test puff sent bubbles drifting toward the window, and a counter-draft pulled them back. The two air currents collided above the work table, bursting the bubbles before she could move her pencil. A brass hand drill from an earlier project rattled as a strong breath of air spun its handle. The added rattle mixed with the window whistle. Late afternoon light slanted through the dusty glass, warming the brass hinges on the specimen drawers. A folded strip of deep velvet, once part of a public display, lay on a side shelf.
Joy pressed her fingertip against the velvet, testing its weight. She unfurled the strip and pinned one end under a glass jar. She hoisted the rest upward like a soft sail. The cloth billowed against the window frame and blocked the entering gust. Tiny drafts still slipped around the edges and made the velvet ripple. Threads on the corner began to loosen. A faint line of lint drifted free each time the fabric snapped. With the window force muffled, Joy lifted the bellows again. One steady squeeze pushed a gentle puff that carried three fresh bubbles across the table. They floated clear of the vent and eased into a glass funnel where the air lay still. A ring of rainbow film circled the funnel rim. Joy leaned close and copied the pattern onto her sketch sheet. Behind her, the velvet sagged. The gust kept tugging until a seam cracked, and pale dust sprayed across the tray. The falling powder settled on the wet soap, printing ghostly rings that matched her drawing. Joy folded the torn velvet onto a stool. The bellows lay beside it, speckled with soap spray.
