Warm straw mixed with the sharp odor of fresh pine shavings. Plums in a wooden crate near the door began to ripen.

Sam crossed the rugged beam path toward the chick brooder, yet two noises blocked every soft chirp he wanted to catch. A thin chain on a metal feed bucket swung against its hook, setting off a bright ring that echoed between the granite water trough and the back wall. At the same time, the old grain auger outside sent a steady hum through the floorboards; the whole barn vibrated. Even a ladybug resting on a hay stalk quivered. Sam spotted a thick saddle blanket draped over a rail. He folded the blanket twice, lifted it high, and draped it over the swaying bucket so the cloth muffled the ringing. The cloth’s edge brushed the shelf above, nudging a carved wooden ibex. The small figure toppled, tapped the rail, and clicked onto the soil below. With the sharp ring muted, Sam knelt beside the auger’s pulley and pressed a wood wedge against the belt until the vibration thinned to a lower pitch. Straw seeds clung to the blanket, and loose threads frayed where the metal rim rubbed against it. The ibex figure now lay on its side, its paint scratched.

The blanket sagged farther, dropping a faint dust of chaff onto Sam’s boots. Overhead, a slow creak kept sliding along the rafters.

毯子再度下滑，抖落一層細糠在山姆靴尖。椽木上方，緩慢的嘎吱聲仍沿著屋架延伸。
