After the Cord Tightened- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

A low rubbery hum quivered through the print shop floor. Each pull of the old press sent the belt twanging against its wheels. Joy wiped ink from her fingers and leaned over the heavy cylinder. A fresh proof sheet lay trapped under the roller, still glossy and fragile. Above her, a drying line sagged with rows of classroom homework, the wet sheets darkening the elastic cord. The proof had to reach Kent, her patient mentor, before noon. She braced both hands, tried to slide the sheet free, and felt the paper tear along one edge. The roller only flexed, then pressed harder, as if the trapped ink gripped it like gum.

While she paused, warm light slid across the metal type, carrying the faint smell of linseed oil. The sagging line creaked, reminding her of the tension stored in its stretched cotton weave. An idea sparked. She lifted one drooping stack and looped the cord once around the iron press handle. Then she let the weight hang again. The cord tightened, drawing the handle upward; the roller rose enough to loosen its grip. Joy pinched the free corner of the proof and peeled it away in a single smooth pull. At that moment the gathered tension rebounded along the line. The sudden jolt shook several homework sheets from their wooden clips. They fluttered down like uneven jigsaw pieces.

Loose pages drifted across the inked floor, leaving tiny splashes wherever they landed. Joy gathered them, pressed each damp corner against the drying rack, and straightened the twanging cord. She slid the rescued proof into a clean folder beside the type table. Then she placed the last fallen sheet on top of the stack.

她稍作停頓，暖色光線掠過金屬活字，帶來淡淡的亞麻籽油味。下垂的晾紙線吱呀作響，提醒她那條棉線裡仍存著拉力。一個念頭閃過。她抬起其中一疊下垂的紙，將線在鐵質手柄上繞一圈，再把紙的重量放回去。棉線繃緊，拉高了手柄；滾筒因此微微抬起，夾力減弱。喬伊捏住紙角，一口氣把印樣整張剝開。就在那刻，積蓄的張力沿線反彈。突如其來的震動把幾疊作業從木夾上甩下，它們像參差不齊的拼圖碎片飄落。

鬆脫的紙片在墨色地板上飄散，落處留下細小的水漬。喬伊把它們收攏，將每一個濕角重新按回晾架，順手拉直仍然嗡響的棉線。她把救出的印樣滑進活字桌旁的乾淨資料夾。然後，她把最後一張掉落的紙疊到整齊堆上。
