Cora stepped over fallen pears, shaking a tin noisemaker made from last year’s gourd; its dry seeds rattled and startled sparrows into the air. The two children crouched near a flat stone between roots, curious about the sticky liquid resting in the glass.

Theo tipped the jar. Heavy syrup oozed out, forming a slow amber pool that spread until the rough stone slowed its edge. He pressed one finger into the surface, then dragged a short line toward the grass. Cora answered by pouring a thinner stream of berry juice from a smaller cup; purple swirls curled into the amber under gentle pressure and tiny bubbles popped as trapped air escaped.
