"The bucket is heavy." A child's voice drifted past the garden fence. A young rabbit twitched its nose beneath the low tool shelf and sniffed the rich scent of damp soil. Warm light pressed through grape leaves, carrying the sharp zest of crushed mint that a shoe had brushed minutes earlier. Rows of lettuce lay ahead like a private feast, and no spade or wheelbarrow blocked the path. A cricket sprang from a cracked tile, tapped the shelf, and vanished into thyme. Above, two old willow rods crossed each other; the gardener's intuition years ago had tied them with a faded elastic cord so vines could climb. The cord still held, yet its green strand sagged in a long slow arc.

The sun climbed higher and slapped heat onto the open patch. The rabbit paused; the leaves at the top wilted quickly, turning a lunch break into a joke of burning light. It slid beneath a broad rhubarb leaf that had fallen, chewed through its thick stem, and dragged the cool canopy toward the willow rods. One swift leap, a stretch of hind legs, and the stem caught under the cord. The cord flexed, pulled the leaf upward, and snapped back to a taut shelter. Inside the sudden shade, the rabbit nibbled with quick bites, juice glistening on its whiskers. The leaf began to dry; edges curled inward, and tiny holes spread where veins cracked. A wandering cricket landed on the leaf, and the brittle surface bounced, shaking a bead of leftover dew straight onto the rabbit’s ear. It finished the final lettuce rib and nosed the wilted stem aside. The small body hopped toward the shadow beside the watering can.
