Four stone steps separated the keeper's cottage from the round base of the lighthouse. Max carried a kettle up those steps while Pia balanced a leather folder filled with tide charts. Inside the lamp room, a brass artifact — a dented sextant — rested beside their ink bottle. Their morning ritual involved copying the night beacon log into clean pages, so each sat an arm-length apart at the narrow desk. Through the great lens overhead, a fresh gleam of sunlight touched the brass, and gentle warmth rose from the stone floor. A soft hiss came from the kettle as it cooled, and an inkling of mist formed on the glass rim of the lens. The tower had stood on the oceanfront cliff for a century, and faint metal ticks echoed whenever the glass frame expanded in the strengthening heat.
Moments later, the sunbeam sharpened; concentrated light heated the brass until it pricked Max’s fingers and made the fresh ink curl at the edge of the page. Pia slid sideways, but the heat followed along the desk like a moving spotlight. She caught sight of the tin lid that had once covered the kettle and lifted it above the page, creating a quick shield. Max propped two empty cups under the lid, and they continued writing behind the trembling metal. Steam from the unfinished tea met the cooling side of the lid; droplets gathered, then dripped, leaving dark rings on the paper and a dull warp along the edge of the tin. By noon the log was complete, yet the bent lid still perched between the cups and a shallow pool of water circled the sextant. A tiny sand-colored moth drifted through the open window. It brushed the warped tin once and fluttered back toward the lazy light above.
Translation
