English Original
A faint hum rolled from the small hand-crank rotor each time Lyra turned it. Thin metal fins inside the clear drum began to spin. The freshness of crushed mint rose through the gaps. Grant leaned closer to check the evenly cut portion of leaves resting on the turning tray. The two friends worked in the quiet observation corner. Jars, coils of copper wire, and a wide glass lens lined the shelves. Pale morning light touched the polished brass, and a cool draught brushed their sleeves. A wooden wheel, fixed below the drum, pivoted on a single steel pin. Each rotation nudged a tiny gear that counted the rounds. Grant waited beside the window, his fingers hovering with brief hesitation before adding another herb sample. The motion wanted balance, yet the added weight threatened wobble.
The moment Grant released the new leaves, the drum wobbled and a loose screw started to unwind. Lyra caught the handle before the gear stalled. She twisted her wrist the opposite way to slow the spin. The weight still dragged one side downward, while the remaining momentum pressed outward. She shifted her grip, lowering the handle and letting the wheel reel forward with shorter strokes. Grant steadied the frame by pressing two knuckles against the wooden rim. Their combined adjustment evened the orbit, though the tray now carried a thin spiral of scattered mint. A surprised puff of powder marked the unexpected twist. A hidden seed pod split under the force and painted the inner wall green. Neither of them tried to collect the dust; they only watched the drum glide at a steady pace. The cracked pod hovered against the glass. The handle drifted back and forth without another drop in rhythm.
Translation
