She pushed the heavy basket toward the twin basins. Warm steam irritated her eyes, so Tara blinked and kept moving. Sloshing water poured from the upper tap, falling in a bright indoor waterfall. Beside the basins, a square washer rattled through its spin cycle. A small grey cat crouched on its warm lid. The shaking machine stood on rubber pads. It nudged a wooden shelf that held a metal flask and a forgotten fruit peeler. Soap scent drifted through the damp air while bubbles drifted upward and burst. Warm light from a high window striped the damp walls.

While Tara wrung a sheet against the side of the tub, the vibrations grew. The flask edged forward first. It gathered speed and rolled off the shelf. It struck the peeler in mid-fall, momentum sent the sharp tool skidding across the slick table. Both objects bounced into the basin together, denting the surface and spraying water across the tiles. The cat leapt away as drops scattered. The splash overran a narrow groove that cut across the floor like a miniature ravine. The soapy stream raced along it.

Tara dropped a towel in front of the flow and pressed down, yet water slid beneath her palms. One rubber pipe was shaken loose, and fresh suds joined the stream. She braced one knee against the basket and tried another towel. She watched the dented flask spin slowly inside the churning water. A wet stripe stretched across the tiles. Water slid along the groove and tapped the bucket wall again and again.

塔拉把床單在盆邊擰乾時，震動更強了。水壺先移動，漸漸加速，最後滾下架子。它在半空撞上削皮刀，衝力讓那把銳利的小工具在滑桌上疾速掠過。兩樣東西一起跌進水盆，砸出凹痕，水花濺滿地磚。小貓被飛散的水滴驚得跳開。水花漫過一道像迷你峽谷的地面細槽，起泡水順著槽快速奔流。

塔拉把毛巾丟到水流前並用力壓住，但水還是從手掌下滑走。一根橡膠管被震鬆，更多泡沫湧入水道。她用膝蓋頂住籃子，又換另一條毛巾。她盯著凹陷的水壺在翻騰的水裡慢慢旋轉。濕痕橫掃過地磚，水仍沿著細槽滑行，不斷拍擊桶壁。
