English Original
A granite island stood two strides from the stove, leaving a narrow passage between them. Ned placed a wide cutting board near the island’s center and set a glass jar beside it. The jar held a dried sea cucumber he had soaked earlier for soup. From the open pantry across the tiled floor, he fetched carrots and ginger, then returned through the passage. The dishwasher under the sink started its rinse cycle, and a steady hum filled the room. Warm steam rose from a pot nearby and curled through a stripe of afternoon light. Ned chopped, the knife making short, sharp rhythms that bounced off the cabinet doors. Above the island, a loose metal tray leaned upright against the wall cupboard. It vibrated gently with every new swell from the machine.
The hum deepened, and tiny spoons hanging on a rail began to ring together. Ned paused, flexed his fingers, and changed his grip before continuing. Without warning, the rising vibration matched the tray’s own pitch; the tray began to slide downward. It clanged against the island, jolting the jar. The jar rolled once, bumped into a spoon, and veered toward the board. Water splashed over the granite, lifting carrot peels in a shallow stream. Ned braced the board with one hand and caught the jar with the other. It stopped just short of the polished edge. He pushed the board farther from the drop. Then he laid a folded cloth under the jar to dampen any further tremor. The dishwasher slowed and its hum faded to a faint hiss. Somewhere behind the fridge, a final rattle drifted off into still air.
Translation
