English Original
A wooden cleat squeaked under a tight rope, and a light trill of music rose from a tin whistle on the boardwalk. Small waves tapped the pilings, and a gull flapped once and glided on the quiet air.
Cruz and Verity paused near the repair shed. Sun warmed the handrail; a dry salt smell mixed with tar from coiled lines. A green skin had grown on a copper bell above the door, and the single windowpane showed a long scratch in one corner. On a shelf by the rail sat a faded souvenir pinwheel made of thin paper, its center held by a tiny copper bead. Cruz lifted it and blew once. The blades turned with a soft flutter and then slowed. He gave a patient, longer breath through tight lips, and the pinwheel hummed. “Hear that?” Verity said, leaning closer. A small gust came along the dock and pushed his breath aside, so the spin wobbled and faded. Verity pointed her chin toward the shed. “The window is open.” They stepped nearer. A cool draft slid through the gap, and the pinwheel spun faster without a touch.
On the workbench inside lay a little bellows, its handles cracked from years of use. Cruz pressed it gently; a short puff leaped out and brushed dust from the sill. The dust lifted like smoke, and the pinwheel quickened again. A line of shells on a string under the eave began to tick together as the air shifted. Then a thin whistle came from the scratch in the windowpane, high and clear, and it joined the dock sounds like a surprise note in a song. “It’s making a tune,” Verity said, barely above a breath. The gap widens as the breeze works at the frame. The shells tap in a slow rhythm while the pinwheel turns under the draft.
Translation
