The stairwell was still and cool, but the laundry room door vibrated with a low metallic drone. Ella balanced a damp tablecloth, water dripping from the corner where the dishwasher had overflowed an hour earlier. Ivan followed, a tray from the dishwasher that had been cleaned had been left rattling against his knee. If the machine were free, they would finish quickly; instead, the drum inside kept spinning, beating against pipes that echoed up the walls. Ella had promised to tidy everything before dinner, so she stepped inside the narrow room to wait, the fluorescent tube above her buzzing like an insect caught in glass.
As she shifted the basket, a dull thump escaped; the rim caught a leaning broom. Wood slapped metal, and the broom handle rammed a half-full detergent bottle. The plastic popped, slid, and thudded against a steel bucket resting near the drain. The bucket rocked once, rattling like brief thunder, then tipped. Water left inside sloshed out, pattering over tiles and nudging a transparent scoop that had been resting upside down. The scoop skittered forward, tapped the washing-machine door, and finally spun to a wobbling hush. Ivan lunged, shoe squeaking, and braced the bucket before it could crash against the wall, the echoes dying in uneven steps.
A splattered trail now glittered under the strip light, but the washing machine completed its cycle with one last groan and fell silent. Ella laughed, “I don’t hold a grudge against that broom, but it sounded resentful.” Ivan replied, “Back home our field was barely a hectare; everything seemed quieter than this room.” Together they loaded the spinning drum with the dripping cloth, and a fresh whir started, softer than before. Outside the doorway, their neighbor’s music drifted in faint bursts through the corridor grille. A pigeon beat its wings once above the balcony railing and angled toward the rooftop.
Translation
