She balanced a bulging basket against her hip, its damp fabric sticking to her arm, while a ginger cat traced silent steps along the mailbox ledge. Pipes behind the plaster thumped, sending a dull vibration through the narrow edifice. Farther up, the upstairs biologist emerged, cradling a glass dish packed with moss and a grey stone as round as a pocket-boulder. He nodded, placed both items on the windowsill, and disappeared into his apartment.

June waited, toes drumming on the gritty concrete, yet the spin cycle dragged on. Warm machine air rose and curled around her knees, so she crossed to the balcony for a breath of moving air. She shook one towel; pinned water burst free and pattered onto a fern in the planter below. The sudden shower stirred a pigeon hiding beside the fronds. Machine doors finally unlatched; the previous load ended. June eased the basket forward, and one loose crumb of rock skidded in a shallow spiral across the bottom step.
