English Original
Three dull rings of silt had dried on the post-office linoleum, each circle wider than the last. Vent fans droned above while ticket tones pinged through the waiting area. Ivy stepped over the pattern; her boots brushed grit with a faint scrape. Envelope bundles thudded, stamp pads thumped, and tape tore in quick bursts. A storage drawer rattled, then went silent. The rings coiled like a loose spiral, then vanished beneath a bench leg. She slipped a paper ticket from its slot just as the device buzzed and took a seat between two softly squeaking armrests, listening to the floor echo with passing shoes.
A double chime summoned number twelve; hers was higher, so she opened her bag. Inside lay a saucepan that had been wrapped in brown paper the night before, ready for her cousin. The metal still carried yesterday’s soap scent. She nudged the handle and it drummed against the counter lip, earning a glance from the clerk. When her number arrived, the scale released a low drone: overweight by one gram. String rasped, paper crackled, and the pan scraped free, revealing a jewel-toned postcard wedged underneath. Turquoise flecks dotted a dark field on the card, resembling tiny plankton drifting through midnight water. Paper crumbs hissed across the counter as she unfolded the rest of the wrapping.
The clerk mentioned a lighter box; Ivy hovered, comparing the postcard to the floor marks. The turquoise grains matched fragments inside the dried rings. She tipped the pan; dry residue slid out, sketching a fresh curve across the stainless surface. So the original circles were not water stains at all—they were powder shaken loose during her earlier walk. Choosing to keep the glossy card as padding, she brushed the residue away and tightened the new parcel. The package returned to the scale with a brief metallic ping, and a soft, steady hum lingered.
Translation
