Story Content
English Original
“This box keeps wobbling.”
Theo slid it onto the package scale, elbows tucked in, keeping his knuckles clear of the metal rail. Late-afternoon sun threw long stripes across the tiles, while the parcel drop-box cast a stretched silhouette that split the floor. Fluorescent tubes washed the blue-grey counters with flat light, leaving sharp shadow lines under the tape dispenser and the side table. A stuffy, humid layer clung to his forearms as the scale’s display blinked and blinked, not yet settling on weight. The tape end had begun to unravel, curling over the side table and brushing the surface with little touches that shifted readings. He recentered the box, smoothed the loose tail hard, and watched the blinking pause, then flicker again under the even ceiling glow.
The overhead display beeped, and his grandparent held their ticket near the entrance lamp, the last digit torn mid-curve along the edge. “This ticket looks odd; the last digit tore, and I can’t tell which number this actually is,” the grandparent murmured. Theo glanced between the pulsing screen and the rip, hugging the parcel closer, light banding his sleeve and striping the cardboard lid. If they had stayed with the counter plan, that torn digit would have kept their place unclear at the window. He shifted course and carried the box to the self-service machines, where the envelope feeder clicked in a steady, slow pace. Under the flat glare, his first coin tilted; the narrow mouth pinged and rejected it, a bright reflection flashing along the slot. He squared his wrist and fed two coins level, then watched a printed sticker creep out beneath a clean strip of light. Years of parcels had dulled the steel plate, and a dark smudge curved where many boxes had rotated to meet the reader.
He pressed the sticker down, and the humid air softened an edge until another tape strip sealed it flat against the carton. He weighed the box again; the digits steadied, and then he crossed to the drop-box and pushed the flap, which clanged once. At the form desk, the chained pen rattled as a gust rolled through, lifting loose sheets in a brief eddy. At the ticket machine, a new visitor pulled too fast, and the offset print slid toward the line where the paper parted. Under the small pool of light, half a digit hung by one thin fiber and trembled.
Translation
