Three faint water rings had dried into pale ovals on the bar counter. Only then did Hugo glance toward the crowded dining area. Every table was occupied, and a silver queue stand traced a narrow path to the entrance. A tabby cat sprawled near the kitchen doorway, its whiskers twitching whenever dish clinking drifted close. Hugo aimed for the waiting list tablet, hoping to write his name before another family arrived. He misjudged the cat’s tail, nudged it, and almost lost balance in a clumsy stumble. The tablet slid sideways, flashing a spectrum of blue-grey reflections across the laminated counter.

Before Hugo could steady the device, a server carried three plates past, forcing him to step back toward the bar. That shift placed the cat directly between him and the glowing screen, creating an awkward, low-level conflict for space. He bent his knees, angled his shoulder, and counted the rhythm of passing trays before sliding sideways. The adjustment almost worked until a glass of soda wobbled near the edge, drawing the server’s quick hand. Hugo paused again, breathing through parted lips while the cat rose, twirled, and padded toward the entrance waiting area. A scenic poster of distant ice cliffs hung above them, its frost-white tones echoing the restaurant’s pale ceiling lights. With a clearer lane now, Hugo straightened, stretched an arm, and finally tapped his information into the queue.

A soft paw slapped the tablet before Hugo withdrew, and the screen jumped back to the top of the list. Numbers reshuffled, pushing his request down ten places; every nearby guest burst into quick laughter at the accident. Instead of protesting, Hugo knelt, offered the cat an untouched bread roll, and waited beside the kitchen doorway. Steam from the coffee machine drifted overhead, leaving tiny droplets that cooled on his hair like silver dust. The queue advanced slowly, yet no further mishap appeared, and the tablet kept its calm blue glow. Outside, a grey pigeon landed on the plaza tiles near the patio edge. It jerked forward twice, pecked the fallen bread crumb, and fluttered behind a chair, disappearing from view.

就在他抽手之際，柔軟的貓掌拍向平板，畫面瞬間跳回名單頂端。號碼重新排序，他的登記往後推了十格；周圍客人爆出短促的笑聲。雨果沒有抗議，只是跪下來，把一小塊麵包遞給貓，在廚房門旁靜靜等待。咖啡機的蒸氣飄過頭頂，細小水珠落在他髮梢，變成冷冷的銀色粉末。隊伍緩慢前進，再沒有新的意外，平板維持著沉穩的藍光。戶外，一隻灰鴿落在靠近露臺邊的廣場地磚。牠連跳兩步啄起掉落的麵包屑，然後振翅掩進椅腳後方，身影隨即消失。
