English Original
Theo nudged the corner of a tall cabinet in the maritime wing, and a rolled visitor guide slid to the polished floor—why had it come loose when nothing else moved?
He bent to retrieve the tube, but it kept rolling across the blue-grey tiles, gathering speed on a slight slope he had not noticed. The tube bumped the leg of a metal stand that displayed a replica guitar from an ancient string-instrument collection. The stand pivoted, and the guitar’s neck tapped a tray of miniature harbour models. A painted quay wall toppled from the tray and struck a fist-sized granite sample in the geology display beside it. The stone glided only a short distance under the glass divider; Rosa’s sneaker blocked its path before it could knock anything else. Visitors along the corridor paused, their reflections scattered across adjacent cases like fragments of silver light. Rosa traced the gentle tilt of the floor with her eyes and whispered, “The entire wing tilts toward the lockers area.” Frames along the skirting board had been fixed by contractors earlier in the week; the adjustment had been completed in haste.
Rosa steadied the guitar stand while Theo pushed the quay wall back onto its tray. The granite sample had been deemed fragile by curators; a label underneath had been printed, laminated, and finally placed by gloved hands, yet nobody had checked the angle of the tiles beneath. Theo lifted the visitor guide and wedged it under the cabinet base, reducing the slope. The chain of objects rested, but a blue brochure from the gift-shop entrance fluttered off a nearby table, drifted across the faint incline, and slipped into the gap between two cases before either of them could react. A faint hum from the ceiling vent drifted toward the emptied corridor.
