A ruler-straight gap interrupted the row of reference volumes on the top shelf. Luke craned his neck, balanced on the balls of his feet, and traced the dusty outline with his fingertips. Warm air from a ceiling vent rolled past his hair while the carpet muted each careful shift of the light stool he dragged closer. As he rose onto the top rung, his calves tightened and his shoulders rolled forward, trying to measure the missing width. Fluorescent tubes cast a soft spectrum across the remaining spines, from deep navy to sun-bleached green, yet none matched the sequence the gap demanded. Closing time signs had not lit up, but the hush already pressed around him.
Luke flexed his fingers and reached deeper, expecting the smooth linen of a forgotten volume. Instead, his knuckles struck something cool and unyielding. The object refused to slide; his wrists strained while he tugged. It had been wedged between two thick dictionaries for years, judging from the dark rim of dust edging its side. Dust drifted down, pricking his forearms. If the lightweight stool wobbled again, he would step down and reposition it, yet curiosity anchored his heels. He adjusted his grip, leaned his torso sideways, and rocked the item gently. A subtle grind answered each motion, as if stone brushed against wood. After several short pulls, the rectangular mass shifted a centimetre and finally tipped forward into his waiting palms, forcing his elbows to bend under unexpected weight.
The surface, now visible under the reading lamp, was not cloth at all. Polished granite disguised its face, carved with thin grooves to imitate pages. Along the faux spine, shallow scratches hinted that colour once covered the stone, ready to transform it into an ordinary book among many. Luke rolled it over and discovered a hinged panel revealing a hollow centre that held yellowed sheets: diagrams of switchboard circuits and neat notes from an anonymous operator. The surprise rewrote his earlier idea; no missing catalogue stood here, but a camouflaged case hiding someone’s private manual. Chairs scraped in the distant study corner as lights dimmed for evening shutdown, yet Luke was easing the granite shell onto the return cart.
