A steel bracket on the ceiling projector rattled in uneven bursts, louder than the quiet keyboard taps below. Kent paused at the meeting-room door; would the shaky piece survive the afternoon briefing or crash onto the carpet? The metallic beat kept rising, echoing along the corridor until the aging printer answered with its own groan. Near the break-room entrance, a compact treadmill added a rubbery swish each steady belt cycle. Between those layered sounds, someone’s phone played a recording of last year’s office play. Exaggerated voices heavy with melodrama leaked through half-closed blinds. Kent lifted his chin slightly, tracking every vibration like a conductor catching off-tempo notes. A soft squeak, lighter than the bracket’s clatter, came from reception where a plush quokka mascot dangled against a metal file tray. That smaller noise briefly masked the projector’s racket, yet the sharper rattle soon returned and bounced off thin fluorescent panels overhead.
Kent crouched beneath the projector housing and aimed to silence it before chairs filled. His initial twist on the visible screw failed; the bracket kept vibrating. He fetched a thin butter knife from the break-room sink, but the tool slipped during two clumsy attempts. Choosing to probe deeper, he steadily loosened the side panel that had been secured by four tiny bolts. If he knew the cause, a simple broom handle could easily seal the panel and keep it tight shut. The panel fell away, revealing a plastic quokka keychain wedged between a fan blade and the frame. Each burst of noise had been the toy smacking metal, not a structural fault in the mechanical device itself. Kent quietly laughed under his breath, tugged the charm free, and slipped it into his pocket. He climbed on the chair again and finally flicked the small power knob on the projector casing.
