Five stops earlier, Nora had wedged herself onto the rear bench, the wooden arch balanced on her lap. Each block smelled faintly of aromatic cedar; the tiny keystone still waited beside her elbow. The arch had been shaped during afternoon carpentry lessons and was meant to honor her grandfather’s trade. Shallow notches along the blocks showed patient weathering from repeated test fittings during the week. Amber advertisements flickered above the aisle, their reflections gliding over brass poles and curved window frames. While the tram hummed through amber tunnels, she twisted the lid from her travel thermos. A ribbon of tea rose as vapor, and she brushed a damp sponge across the waiting keystone. The carriage lurched through a curve, shaking her arms and blurring the cabin lights. A trail of tea slipped over the bench, ran along an unseen groove, and disappeared beneath the seat in front of her.
Warm air pushed upward through the grate, catching the spill and lifting aromatic droplets in a brief golden haze. Steam from damp winter coats mingled with the scent, hanging low among the swinging straps like pale threads. That rising puff loosened an old ticket stub lodged between the slats. The paper fluttered free, drifted across the aisle, and brushed a commuter’s shoe before skating toward the door. Nora folded her scarf twice, pressed it against the grate, and watched the stream slow to beads that vanished into the cloth. With the flow held back, she slipped the arch into its cardboard sleeve and tucked the cedar keystone inside.
The tram finally braked at Central Station, its wheels humming while overhead lights shifted in a slow ripple, and sparks flared outside. She stepped onto the platform, scarf damp but model intact, as departing doors met with a muted thud behind her. A gust from the departing carriage curled around her ankles, lifting day-old leaves across the tiles. A freed ticket slid along the corridor floor toward the empty front vestibule.
Translation
