English Original
"A muddy paw print right here." Owen crouched beside the waiting-room chair and lifted his tote bag. A ceiling panel flickered, throwing a bright square across the linoleum and leaving the print half in darkness. Another print glimmered near the reception desk, its outline thinner where the glare skimmed the floor. Owen had spent the morning strolling the farmers' market; garden shears jostled against produce inside the cloth bag now brushing his knee. A low whistle from the automatic dispenser cut through the fluorescent buzz, yet no one looked up. The prints curved toward the hallway, each mark separated by uneven gaps like an undulating ribbon of shadow and shine. If the track were any smaller, he would miss it between reflections. He rose, letting the chair legs scrape, and followed the dim trail past the pharmacy window where a bright display case masked the next footprint under reflected gleam.
Near the first exam door, the final mark stopped against a cardboard container wedged beneath a rolling cart. The cart’s metal frame had been positioned by overnight cleaners; its wheels blocked clear access. Owen knelt again, fingertips grazing the edge. The container had been pushed so far back that only a rim caught the corridor light. He tugged once; the cart shifted but the box refused to slide. He tried a second pull from a lower angle, and the wheels rolled enough to widen a hand-width gap. A pale silhouette darted inside the gloom: not a dog after all, but a small tabby cat with clinic tags jingling. The earlier prints reformed in his mind; the stride was lighter than he first assumed. Owen took the garden shears out, tilted them like a short lever, and eased the container forward until the cat could squeeze past and pad toward the parking lot glow. He folded the shears and placed them inside the tote bag.
Translation
