English Original
Three pale paw prints had dried beside the classroom door before the third-period bell faded into silence. Nora crouched, watching a faint glare ripple over the polished floor where each print broke the reflection. A striped cat, back-lit by overhead tubes, slipped across the corridor and squeezed through the partly open supply closet. The dim space beyond held stacked crates, slanted shelves, and one narrow window that let in a thin shaft of light. The hum of the lamps failed to quell the hush that pooled in the corners. Dust floated through that shaft like slow confetti from an absent wedding, turning in and out of brightness.
Inside, the cat balanced on top of a tall cabinet, tail twitches sending ripples of shadow over the notebooks below. Nora pulled a crate from the corner; a narrow stripe of reflected light ran along its side. The crates had been hidden behind a curtain, yet dust still glimmered along their edges. That first lift reached only halfway to the platform. She vowed to help and slid a companion crate into place, lifting the stack to her knee. A last carton—once used for uplifting paper banners during the arts show—completed the tower. The rims finally aligned; brightness and darkness fused into one clear step. The cat stretched, tapped the new ledge, and flowed down to the floor with soundless grace.
Freed from the height, the cat paced toward the corridor, its fur flashing in alternating bands of glare and shade. An outside breeze hummed through the half-open doorway, rustling the litter of paper curls on the floor. Nora bent to gather the crates, stacking them back against the wall before the next bell could slice the morning again. As she moved the first box, a glossy brochure from a wedding reception skidded out and drifted into the light. She tucked the leaflet away, then brushed her palm over the nearest tile where the original paw prints had begun. A faint silhouette of one print still glimmered under the overhead tubes.
Translation
