The acrylic dispenser beside the reception bell displayed only a ragged tear where the ticket roll normally started, leaving a transparent gap the size of a postage stamp. Joy leaned forward until her forehead nearly touched the cool counter, hoping a stray slip waited deeper inside, yet her fingers met only hollow plastic. Behind her, fluorescent tubes hummed over blue-grey chairs and a cardboard carrier on one seat rocked softly; through its air holes, a round quail blinked at the room and tipped its head. A nurse’s voice announced number forty-two, then forty-four, skipping forty-three altogether, and Joy realised the empty slot mattered more than the buzz overhead.

The clinic hallway, once a steel-framed workshop, kept faint drill scars along the skirting, and every footstep pressed dust into those silver points. Joy moved to the form-filling desk, yet the only pen there scratched without ink; her patience could tolerate three strokes before she exhaled and adjusted her grip. A man balancing on a maple cane reached for a second pen, found it dry as well, and shrugged. At that moment the cardboard box toppled—the quail had kicked the side panel. The bird fluttered low across the linoleum, wings brushing a frost-white urn that stood near the water cooler and rattled its lid. Startled, the receptionist shifted, elbow striking the dispenser housing.

The jolt shook a fresh stretch of blue paper loose from the roll inside. Joy crouched, knees grazing the cold floor; the new angle let her thread two fingers through the narrow slot and tear a strip before the dispenser swallowed it again. Her left knee refused to tolerate more bending, so she rose quickly and returned the bird to the box while the cane-user held the lid steady. A single loud breath escaped the urn’s mouth before silence resumed. Joy unfolded the ticket—number forty-three at last—then walked toward the pharmacy window. The dispenser that had been empty now showed a thin blue edge curling outward like a tongue against the clear casing.

Translation
