Bea pressed the cracked button on the ticket dispenser, and the strip brushed the inside of her palm. Warm, weighty air coated her forearms while rows of fluorescent tubes continued to dazzle anyone who risked looking up. She had already weighed the small cardboard box; the digital scale had been reset by the clerk a minute earlier. A glass partition felt cool against her knuckles as she slid the customs form through the narrow slot beneath it. The clerk tapped an empty declaration square, a profound insight delivered without a single sound or lifted eyebrow. Forms carrying flaws returned to the line’s start, so Bea dared not discuss the missing mark. She moved to the side desk, its gritty laminate snagging her sleeve each time she leaned over the paperwork. Yellow envelopes printed with dancing suns now bounced inside a clear bin, scattering spots of optimism across the steel-coloured room.

As she bent over the desk, the entrance door swung for a stroller, letting a gust rush inside. The wind lifted sample forms, and loose sheets skittered across smooth tiles like startled moths. One drifting page slid beneath her spaniel; the dog lunged, nails tapping hard against the floor. The leash jerked a cup from the cooler ledge, and water splashed, forming a thin ribbon that hurried outward. She dropped her parcel across the moving ribbon, its rough cardboard edge sponging moisture and halting the advance. The queue advanced with the perseverance of syrup, and Bea looped the leash around a chair leg. If the line crawled forward once more, she would present her corrected form without further delay. She gathered the damp forms, smoothed them against the warm window, then stepped into line without turning. A loosened ticket stub drifted near the parcel chute, spinning slowly across the pale tiles.
