"Hold the blanket edge for me."
Joy pressed one knee onto the damp gravel of the walking path while a silken corner fluttered against her fingers. A fountain behind the bench area sent rhythmic plops into the basin, each note echoing off the time-honored stone rim. Sparrows chimed from a branch above, then paused, giving way to a brief lull broken only by distant traffic and the faint hiss of water on marble. Joy had knotted two opposite corners earlier, yet the fabric kept billowing; she shifted her weight and drummed the ground with her palm, hoping the beat would shake loose pebbles to use as weights.
The next gust arrived with a low roar through plane-tree leaves. It lifted the cloth, which brushed Joy’s ear in a soft whoosh and sprang toward the pond bank. The sudden flare startled the sparrows; their wings clattered like tiny cymbals and scattered seed husks onto a family of ducks. Quacks burst in uneven chords, and the ducks paddled hard, sending splashes against the stone edge. The fountain’s steady rhythm had been muffled by the rising wind, and ripples carried the spilled water onto the path. If the gust grew stronger, more crumbs would scatter across the gravel and tempt the squirrels waiting near the playground edge. A kind of gentleman's agreement seemed to form: the birds kept to the branches, and the squirrels remained statues beside the slide, both species choosing silence over collision.
Joy grabbed the runaway blanket just before it reached the pond, then tugged it beneath a low bench rail to honor her picnic plan. She pressed three smooth stones along the hem; their placement thudded, thudded, thudded in a slowing rhythm until even the ducks quieted. A brief creak rose from the gazebo roof as the wind changed direction again, but the blanket stayed pinned. Water continued to patter from the fountain lip, and a narrow stream slid across the clean stone toward the drain under the bench.
Translation
