Three broad planks bridged two thick branches, leaving a half-meter gap beside the rope ladder. Hazel crouched on the warm floor while Cruz knelt near the low window. Overnight, torrential rain had soaked the outer boards. By noon, the sun drew warmth from the wood, and thin steam drifted through the gaps. Sweet cocoa aroma hovered above the boards and mixed with resin rising from the heated bark. A faint shimmer danced in the air between the sunlit slats. A silver kettle, still half full of hot cocoa, sat on a trivet and added its own vapour. The air grew heavy, yet the fishing rod they needed dangled from a peg above the kettle. Both children leaned closer, but rising steam blurred their view. At the same time, heat from the roof pressed on their backs.

They formed a quick huddle beside the bucket pulley. Cruz wiped fog from his glasses. He then pointed toward a sheet of cork that had once covered a drawing board. Hazel tugged it free; the edges cracked softly where last week’s sun had dried it. She propped the cork between the kettle and her face, blocking most of the vapour. The shield soon sagged as moisture soaked in. With one valiant stretch of her free arm, she hooked the fishing rod and eased it down. The cork darkened, warped, and finally slipped, leaving a wet crescent on the floor. It did little to explain their untidy footprints. Steam thinned once the kettle cooled, and roof heat alone no longer felt fierce. A brown beetle crawled through the half-meter gap and paused beside the damp mark. It tapped its shell against the floorboard twice before moving under the railing.
