English Original
A chrome spray bottle, a paddle brush dotted with loose strands, and a narrow shard of mirror lay across the steel-grey tool tray beside the first styling chair. Blue-white ceiling lamps reflected on every surface, and their cool glare stretched onto the tiled floor where Rafe shifted his sneakers. He had waited three appointment slots already; the only free perch was a swivel stool half hidden by a tall evergreen fern that served as quiet décor. A printed chart of times hung near the reception counter, offering guidance rather than obligation, yet the grid still hinted at neat fulfillment for each client.
Rafe nudged the stool outward. The leg tapped the spray bottle, sending a silver arc of mist over the fern’s fronds. Dampened leaves flexed; a tiny green cricket sprang from its leafy abode and landed on Uma’s cape while she trimmed a customer’s bangs. Uma’s eyes widened, and her quick flick of the comb knocked the hair dryer hose dangling from its wall hook. The dryer, which had been placed on low speed, swung like a pendulum and pushed a stack of blue-grey magazines from the waiting table. Pages fluttered across the cool tiles; one sheet slid beneath the water dispenser, and another brushed against the receptionist’s ankle.
Grant, wiping scissors at the next station, stepped forward and unplugged the dryer before its hose could twist farther. The sudden hush left only the soft snip of distant shears and the rustle of scattered paper. The cricket crawled onto the floor, found no more moist leaves, and hopped under the product shelf, ending the chain one quiet beat at a time. Rafe stooped, gathered the icy-toned magazines, and returned them to their rack. The chrome spray bottle that had glistened earlier now rocked in a slow circle on the tray’s rim.
Translation
