The stairwell was bright at noon, but the laundry room beside it lay in shadow. Cora balanced a basket of damp sheets against her hip and edged through the narrow doorway. Her ankle brushed a frayed carpet painted with a forest glade, the coarse fibers prickling through her socks. She had planned a quick wash before visitors arrived, so the single machine ahead looked like the last step in a simple errand. Steam drifted above its lid, yet the drum stayed still—someone had stopped it mid-cycle. She shifted her weight, pressed the start button with one knuckle, and felt nothing respond.
A faint hum from pipes behind the wall faded and dropped away. Cora crouched, palm against the cool metal, sensing no vibration. A mature rubber tree leaned toward the ceiling lamp, its deep-rooted trunk jammed inside a pot layered with pale limestone chips. Sliding the pot aside, she uncovered a shut-off valve. The handle refused to move, so she reached for a wooden broom propped against the dryers. Bracing the broom head under the valve, she levered downward; strain crept up her arms, the stick flexed, and the metal wheel finally inched open. A thin rush of water answered somewhere inside the wall.
The machine whirred back to life, dragging the sheets into slow rotation. For a moment, Cora watched the wet fabric rise and fall like silhouetted sails behind the cloudy lid. A sudden clang inside the washer pulsed through the floorboards; an old coin shot from the drain hose and rattled across the tiles—an unexpected stowaway from a neighbour’s pocket, not a broken pipe. Satisfied, she lifted her empty basket and let the door swing shut behind her.
Hours later, the laundry room held only the faint drip from a drying rack. The broom leaned where she had left it, and the escaped coin glimmered near the limestone chips under the still lamp.
Translation
