Most cages gleamed under clear lamps, but one glass box lay half-covered by a fold of shadow. Tara stopped at the small-animal interaction zone, palms brushing the warm wood shavings scattered across the counter lip. She had visited the shop the week before and hoped to make an impression on her younger brother by choosing the liveliest gerbil. The animal she wanted now curled somewhere under a heap of pale straw, invisible behind the cool pane. She waited, copying a slow breathing relaxation technique; the glass warmed against her fingers, yet nothing inside stirred.
A thin rattle rose when she tried tapping, so Tara withdrew her hand. Nearby, a miniature plastic stable—meant to hold your horses during model play—rested on the supply shelf, its ridged roof dusty. Tucked beside it, a bamboo scoop offered a better reach than her nails, and she lifted it. The handle felt slightly gritty; loose sand from a neighboring terrarium clung to the grain. That display, shaped like a coastal dune with tufts of dried grass, suddenly released a swallowtail that must have hidden under a heat lamp. The bright wings brushed her ear, and the surprise made the scoop slip, knocking the stable onto its side.
Shavings spilled, yet the gerbil still refused to show itself. Tara steadied the scoop, slid her arm through the open cage door, and nudged the straw mound. The first stroke only shifted light pieces; the second revealed the curve of a tiny back, but the creature stayed burrowed. She adjusted her grip, easing the flat edge under a ceramic hideaway slightly glazed from many cleanings. A faint line appeared where the tool lifted the hide, and whiskers poked through. Tara leaned closer, breath held, and was already easing the scoop beneath the hide, hands steady and waiting.
Translation
