"It won't lift," Briar whispered.
He pressed both thumbs against the cool acrylic lid that guarded the dwarf-hamster enclosure near the supply shelf. Scratches crossed the panel in a faint zigzag, and dust blurred the grip more than he expected. Briar pulled upward; the hinge refused, giving only a shiver that rattled the stacked cages beside his elbow. The vibration rolled through salmon-tinted shavings below, waking a small hamster that darted across the bedding like a quick ripple. Startled, the creature brushed its water bottle, and the bottle tapped the wire wall, releasing three bright droplets. Each droplet splashed onto the parakeet cage beneath, so the green bird lurched upward, scattering seed in a widening arc.
Briar stepped aside as Nadia, browsing brightly coloured leashes, steadied the cages with one palm and a short laugh. He drifted toward the aquarium aisle where blue-grey light painted his sleeves, and an air pump hummed like distant machinery. A visiting curator from the city marine gallery carefully compared thermometer numbers. Nearby, staff siphoned water, lifting a bucket that sloshed cold against the outer glass panels. Within one tank, a broad fin of a resting salmon-coloured gourami fanned lazily, brushing away loose threads of plant decay. Briar accepted a narrow net from the clerk and practised dipping, letting water pressure bend the mesh without twisting his wrist. When a neon tetra slipped through the nylon ring, he angled the handle lower, allowing the current to assist instead of fight. After rinsing the net, he dried stray drops on the final square of brown paper towel beside the tanks.
Returning to the small-animal zone, Briar found the acrylic lid propped half-open by a broom handle abandoned during sweeping. The parakeet above preened while the clerk brushed scattered seed toward a dustpan, slowing the chain of movement. Briar slipped two fingers under the cool edge; with a gentler angle the stiff hinge surrendered, rising without another tremor. The hamster, no longer buried, sniffed the air, then climbed into view along a shallow tunnel pressed against the glass front. Briar sprinkled the very last sunflower kernel from a demonstration cup; the small nose twitched and accepted the treat. While the empty cup swung in his hand, pale shavings kept shifting under the hamster's slow steps toward the corner.
