English Original
Viola pressed the ink roller across the type, pushing a thin skin of black onto the gleaming surface before her sleeves even gathered dust. Surplus energy still hummed through her arms after loading the morning’s paper stack, and the heavy frame answered with a muted thrum that vibrated along the wooden floorboards.
At first the signs were faint: a single sheet shifted half a finger’s width, then a corner lifted where the iron platen should have pinched it flat. Nowhere in the workshop had the press behaved this way before, and a pulse ran along its beams like delighted anticipation trapped inside iron. When a third irregularity appeared—a pale bead of water dripping from a warped ceiling plank and darkening the paper’s edge—Viola paused, her fingertips brushing the damp spot twice before she stepped back.
Her sleeves rolled higher, she reached for a wedge kept between two cases of surplus paper, thinking the added lift might steady the stack. Hardly had the wedge touched the platen’s base when a loose bundle slid forward, splaying across her boots. Among the blank sheets glimmered a forgotten print: swirls of teal suggested underwater exploration, divers hovering beside a sandstone arch, bubbles stippling the margins. The image startled her enough that she crouched, holding the sheet at arm’s length while droplets continued to fall behind her.
Viola straightened, weighed the sodden blank sheets in one hand, the vibrant discovery in the other, and turned toward the drying line. The damp paper went aside; the diver scene slid between two fresher prints, ink still sharp despite its hidden stay. Only when it hung there did she notice the roof’s drip had stopped, as though the threshold moment had drawn a line through the workshop’s small disturbances. Behind her, the roller caught afternoon light again, glimmering as the press waited for its next sheet.
Translation
