English Original
Selene dabbed a rag against a narrow damp footprint that glistened between the press pedals, certain Cedric's soggy boots had tracked it in. The room exhaled woolly warmth from the lamp, yet a cool draught threaded the floorboards, letting the chill cling around her ankles. Metal type waited in its wooden case; she lifted a line of reversed letters, their edges cool despite the latent heat pooled around the bulb. “Footprints already?” Cedric murmured from the ink slab, the bristles of his brush tapping a slow rhythm. Rarely had the press room held such humid weight, and Selene answered with a shrug before sliding the composing stick beneath the letters, movements confident, almost carefree.
Paper rose in clipped arcs as they ascended the drying line, each sheet shimmering above the platen like pale sails catching lamp-glow. Selene pulled the lever; the platen descended with its familiar thunk, yet another faint imprint emerged beside the first, this one slimmer, the toes angled inward. The certainty that Cedric owned every mark faltered, and, her fingers still inked, Selene crouched to trace the wet outline. The moisture smelled of linseed rather than street puddles, suggesting ink wash rather than rainwater. A discarded forme lay in quiet abandonment on the side bench, a corner dark with the same diluted shine. “Did you rinse rollers here?” she asked. Cedric only lifted an eyebrow and shook his head.
Ink cooled swiftly when thinned, and though her sleeve brushed the radiator’s pipe, a shy draft cooled the mark before it spread. Selene carried the forme to the light; the worn H and A sat reversed yet perfect, while a meticulous trail of droplets ran from the type bed to the floor. Nowhere on the steel rollers could she find a leak, yet, as though the press were glass, she moved carefully, wary of nudging another drop. Cedric watched, his arm resting on the ink slab, the vicarious strain flexing his knuckles whenever she tilted the forme. Her gaze caught a tiny hole in the water can used to quench molten lead, the rim trembling with residual steam. It was the steady hiss beneath the clatter that linked everything: condensation had slipped along the handle, then fallen, planting the mysterious prints.
Steam ebbed, the can propped on a wooden wedge; droplets gathered, yet clung along its rim. Selene returned to the press, settled the forme, and paused, thumb brushing the leather grip while the metal cooled beneath the draft. Cedric unfolded a fresh sheet without comment, and the lamp’s warmth reached their hands. She drew the handle again, slower, letting the platen sink with measured weight; ink met paper, and the faint hiss fell silent behind the deep mechanical thunk.
