No muffled jingle greeted Joel when his palm brushed the rim of the basket, and the quiet struck him harder than the glow of flame above. The wicker still showed the resilience he trusted—each strand bowed, then sprang back as he shifted his stance—yet the floorboards released only a dry creak instead of the bell-tinkle that usually opened every flight. Delia stepped in beside him, the burner hiss covering her soft intake of breath; rarely had the sky around them sounded so spare. Three days earlier, a fortuitous encounter with a travelling tinker had provided a new copper valve, and Joel had walked away certain everything else remained untouched.
He hit the valve lever once; the flame roared, then faded, leaving the balloon adrift in a hush broken only by distant dog barks reaching them in uneven waves. Something was missing, and both of them leaned to different corners, heads tilted, ears working. The envelope’s worn seams rustled overhead, cloth slapping with each small adjustment of air, but the familiar bell stayed silent. It was the angle of the basket that drew Joel’s attention: the northern rail listed a finger’s width lower than he remembered. Knees bent, he probed the corner and found a brass bell fractured along its rim, half buried in loose wicker ends like a molar shaken from its gum.
Bell braced between thumb and forefinger, he hesitated. Were the split edge smoother, he might have pressed the halves together and trusted the join, yet the crack showed jagged bronze that would scrape any thread. Delia traced the break with one nail, then folded her hand away; the two of them tried to puzzle out how a motionless night on the tether could have snapped metal. Burner hiss met their unanswered question, echoed by a faint, rhythmic hum from farmland below—a sound they had never noticed beneath the bell’s chatter. Joel straightened, shoulders loosening at the new rhythm circling them like an unfamiliar heartbeat.
The descent rope slipped through his fist in small increments; the envelope cooled, and fields rose slowly to meet them. He set the broken bell on the basket floor, shard glinting in the last burst of flame, while Delia steadied the valve handle without a word. Air thickened, dogs barked louder, and the basket touched grass with a short wooden thunk. Behind them, the wicker settled, strands clicking against the silent fragment of bronze.
Translation
