Every afternoon, Faye slipped behind the taut white screen to rehearse the same gentle tale, yet today the lamplight met her differently. The wooden rack usually stood in tidy harmony, each flat figure waiting in an exact order, but one gap now stared back at her. Nowhere among the hanging silhouettes could she find the slim swan her grandfather—the troupe’s quiet progenitor—had carved from leather long before she was born. A brush of her fingertip along the vacant hook raised a thread of dust that twirled through the light like a private signal.
Out front the audience benches stood empty, yet the stage still breathed; when she eased the remaining puppets between lamp and cloth, their shadows flared outward, sharp at first, then enormous and blurred as she drew them back. A paper mare crossed the screen, its outlines grazing a spray of daisies painted low on the backdrop, and the momentary overlap birthed a creature half-flower, half-horse. Her sleeves rolled higher, dust settling on her knuckles, she watched that accidental fusion drift apart, the mare trotting off while the daisy heads remained, bobbing gently in place.
She turned backstage again, scanning shelves, tins, and the coil of spare rods. A shard of colored gel glinted beneath the trestle; lifting it, she noticed others scattered nearby, a fallen spectrum that had once softened the swan’s wings with faint blues. Were the lamp positioned a touch lower, the delineation between bird and sky would blur entirely, yet even with the lamp steady the swan was absent. Faye set the gels aside, then paused, palm on the cool plank, her breath settling. The pause stretched—why keep searching for a bird that might have drifted away days ago? She pivoted, slipped back to the screen, and raised her empty hand into the beam; fingers spread, her own shadow unfurled, wider than any puppet, then folded when she lowered her arm.
She rehearsed the tale once more, leaving the swan’s part silent; on the cloth the other figures edged around the blank space, as though the sky itself held an unseen bird. When the lamp smoked faintly, she snuffed it and stepped away, letting the room fold into dimness behind her. On the vacant screen, a soft outline of daisies lingered, pale yet persistent. Beneath the frame, the leather swan lay side-up, its rod touching the spilled gel shards, the lamplight’s afterglow tracing a wavering spectrum across its cracked wing.
