A single cerulean thread drifts from the cotton screen and catches on Callum’s cuff, the fallen strand a bright trace against the backstage gloom. Rarely had the narrow space sounded so hollow; a bamboo rod he set on the floor tapped twice before lying still. Certain every figure lay in perfect order, he tucks the thread into a pocket and aligns the horse puppet close to the cloth, trusting the crisp outline that blooms. The rod squeaks; its joint protests with the faint crack of drying glue.

Thread pinched between thumb and index finger, he lifts the horse again and notices a dull halo of tarnish around the brass shoulder pin.
