English Original
A staccato clack bounced across the basin’s curved walls, louder than the usual hiss of steam, and Eve raised her head from the plank she was shaping; something under the water had struck stone. The sound gave her a puzzle: had a loosening deposit tumbled, or had a bubble burst against the crust? She crouched, letting her sleeve skim the sublime warmth pressing upward from the spring. Along the inner rim, a white band lay as dense as ermine fur, its edges mottled by rust-orange specks. When a fresh splash followed the clack, tiny waves tapped the plank at her knees, and she pressed the wood flat again, hoping the vibrations would settle.
Hugo knelt opposite, dipping a narrow copper tube into the clearest pocket where convection kept the surface quivering. He wanted to capture the faint whistle rising there; the tube, once part of a broken flute, now served as a reed. Seldom had the pool sounded so alive, yet every time Eve slid her plank forward, cloudy minerals drifted toward his listening spot. What troubled Hugo was the milky swirl rolling through the otherwise glassy circle: it muffled the ring he chased and hid the spiral shadow that looked like a miniature nautilus drifting near the bottom. She shifted to give him space, and the plank’s weight sent another reluctant splash that slapped against the copper.
He set the tube aside, palm steadying it on the warm rock, knuckles still ringing. Her fingers curled around the plank, knuckles damp, she steadied the edge as well; only then did both notice their tasks had braided into one obstacle. Hugo exhaled sharply, reached for a reed stem lying in their basket, and without thinking began rolling it between thumb and forefinger, wrist circling in the same rhythm once used while kneading dough for flatbread. Muscle alone recalled the sequence. The stem thinned evenly, air slipping through its hollow core; the pool answered with a hush. Were the piece a shade lighter, it might have floated away, yet the mineral film gave it heft enough to rest across the water like a bridge.
When Hugo coaxed a breath through the reed, a low whistle unfurled, joined by a trembling resonance from the cavity below. Eve’s plank, now anchored by that narrow bridge, no longer stirred the cloudy drift, and the nautilus shadow grew distinct. For a moment the steam between them thickened, carrying a delicate euphoria that hovered like perfume then slid away on the breeze. Yet the whistle, pure as it was, scattered the quieter clicks she had hoped to trace; the signal she chased slipped beneath the stone shelf and did not return. Around the rim, droplets fell back with patient rhythm, and the reed’s single note hung over the pool like fading mist.
Translation
