No gull cut across the overcast sky outside the panes as Luke pushed the hatch and stepped into the lantern room he had tended for years. He crossed the grated floor with practiced steps, certain every bolt still answered his routine taps, and rested his clipboard on a brass stand; the logbook lay open, its quill wedged where he had left it on his previous round. An affectionate nudge from Tara’s shoulder brushed his sleeve when she followed, her boots sounding a lighter rhythm. Together they began the usual circuit, bodies leaning just enough to balance against the slow rotation of the great lens.
Salt freckles on the inner rim halted Luke’s stride. The beam continued to traverse the horizon, yet the glass scattered faint sparks on sections that once gleamed evenly. Tara crouched, fingertips hovering above the tiny crystals. “Strange,” she whispered, her voice no louder than the machinery’s hum. What troubled Luke was a thin groove scoring the base plate—one that had escaped his checklists. The groove lay shy of the drive cog, as though the metal were growing brittle and shedding powder. Clipboard closed, its quill lying askew, Luke rubbed the tarnish that ringed the mark but left no dent of change.
Only when the beam swept past a distant shoal did Tara stop winding the crank and peer through the glare. She tried to summon the memory of that plate without a scar, then shook her head once, ponytail flicking across her collar. A pause settled between them; Luke’s gloved hand hovered above the switch that could halt rotation, then withdrew. The wind outside thudded against the glass, echoing Luke’s uncertainty inside the chamber. He slid his fingers along the railing—green patina flaked against the leather, revealing a second, subtler groove aligned with the first.
Seldom had Luke left a task unfinished, yet the twin scars ran deeper than any quick repair. Tara’s lamp gauge clicked toward a lower notch; her gaze drifted from dial to doorway. The keeper’s certainty dissolved with each sweep of the weakened beam, and silence gathered like salt in the seams. Luke rested his palm on the main power lever, feeling the metal vibrate under skin that suddenly registered its fragility, and the room waited—still turning—while he decided whether to shut the light or let it circle once more.
Translation
