English Original
From the cedar walkway Luna watched a young attendant tilt a bucket, letting warm spring water glide across the stone lip; steam curled upward before bending away, and she stayed outside the pool’s glow, counting the motionless baskets that once sat in neat pairs. A surplus of folded towels now slumped inside one cracked basket, the fabric edges bleached to nearly the same chalk tone as the mineral crust along the rocks, and nowhere on the long shelf could she find the bright paint that had covered it years earlier.
Steam thinning for a moment, the stones around the pool showed their mottled layers—white at the rim, rust-orange deeper down, then streaks of yellow where hotter jets met cooler runoff. The deposits, brittle as loosened plaster, pressed against a dowel that pinned a warped plank of the footbridge; water kept dripping over the wood, a soft lullaby of taps that slipped between plank and peg. Channels from the overflow merged farther downhill, their trickles weaving new threads of color that intertwined and darkened when clouds drifted across the sun.
Luna stepped closer, laid her reed flute beside the warmest rock, and brushed one fingertip over a shallow groove she did not remember. She paused, boot heel hovering above the board, as though it were still green wood instead of this faded strip dented by countless visitors. Her hesitation broke when a small bubble rose, cracked the surface, and let out a hollow pop; she crouched, tracing the bubble’s path back to a faint seam where two mineral rings seemed ready to split apart. A second look showed the rings had already fused—time had closed the gap while no one watched.
She lifted the flute again, rolled it between her palms, and noticed flecks of white resting inside each finger hole; the spring’s breath had settled there while she examined the pool. Breeze shifted, and steam columns bent just as at her arrival, yet the sound beneath them had altered: drops hit stone in a different cadence, no longer the slow lullaby but a quicker beat that matched her own tapping thumb. Steam gathered once more, wiped the view clean, and she turned toward the path; behind her, the surplus towels sagged in their basket, threads unraveling as mineral vapors settled over them in silence.
Translation
