From the doorway, Max watched a thumb-sized plastic parakeet balanced on the base of the glowing main monitor, its chipped beak pointing seaward. Beyond the figurine, a sonar screen painted gentle green arcs while the cable drum turned, metal spokes catching low lamp light. Humidity clung to the window beside him and filmed a faint haze across every surface in the darkened room. The distant roll of waves reached his ears a fraction after the sonar ping, the two rhythms weaving an uneven duet. He lingered a moment longer, noting how the parakeet’s tiny claws shook whenever the desk fan swung its slow arc. Only then did he step inside, shoulders brushing the door frame as the hum of electronics surrounded him.
He settled into the padded chair, its armrests slick from earlier hands, and wrapped his fingers around the joystick’s rubber grip. The stick held a pleasant weight; each millimetre of pressure travelled down kilometres of cable before the underwater vehicle obeyed. Seldom had the main monitor appeared so bright, a full spectrum of blues sliding beneath the ROV as its lamp swept the abyssal plain. A pallid patch emerged on the feed, round as a dinner plate, lying motionless among rippled sand like plaster on fabric. What caught his eye was the steady shadow at its edge, darker than rock yet quivering with something too slight to identify. He let the thrusters pulse once, then stilled them, unwilling to stir more sediment than the surplus already drifting in the light cone.
Humidity thick over the panels, he rubbed a sleeve across the glass, and the patch on-screen sharpened into tiny specks flickering silver. He nudged the joystick, then paused midway, the delay nagging at his timing, as though the tether were an extension of his wrist. A second later the ROV drifted closer; grains of silt lifted in loose spirals. The specks unfurled into a swirling biomass of brine shrimp, their bodies catching the lamp like metallic dust. The patch he had marked as stone revealed itself as life, an entire layer moving in quiet concert just beneath the sand veneer. Max’s back straightened, and the parakeet bobbed again, mirroring the tiny crustaceans now fluttering across the screen. He breathed out slowly, the room’s blue light chilling the sweat already gathering on his knuckles.
He considered sweeping onward to map the field, yet his thumb hovered above the thrust button while the shrimp cloud drifted like colored smoke. The joystick’s spring pushed gently against his palm, offering resistance that felt identical to the living carpet quietly resisting the lamp’s bright intrusion. The plastic bird tipped forward on its perch, clicking faintly against the monitor’s bezel. A slow roll of wave noise outside lined up with the sonar ping, and the whole room settled, as if depth and shore had synchronized for a beat. His hesitation broke; he leaned forward, tapped a marker on the track pad, and eased the joystick toward the newly shimmering biomass.
Translation
