From the granite ridge, Hana watched Amos skate slow circles across the frozen lake, his orange scarf drawing wide rings on the pale mirror. A faint groan rolled beneath him, the sound sliding outward like breath inside a hollow drum. Occasional bass notes percolated through the ice, rolling outward before drowning beneath the quiet sky. Two wooden frames stood near the shore; one carried a dangling tin bell, and the other hung empty, its rope swaying without resistance. The empty frame caught her gaze first, not the moving figure. She waited, boots planted on frost-whitened moss, letting the silence around that gap settle in her ears.

Hardly had she stepped onto the ice when Amos glided close and stopped with a hiss of shaved crystals. He gesticulated in swift, angular loops, sketching the missing sound with elbows and mittens alone. His voice followed the gesture in a quiet echo, “Gone, right?”, the words clipping the air and settling just beyond her skates. She tried to articulate the change, yet her tongue stiffened, so she pointed a glove toward the mute frame again. Overhead a gull whirled once, its cracked call skidding away on the same wind that used to ring the bell last winter. Her left foot stalled, blade half-turned, as if the ice asked whether she still trusted its hush today.

It was the small rusted can beside a boulder that offered material for their attempt. Amos lifted it, wire handle frozen crooked; they had meant to recycle such scraps, yet now pressed metal into service. Gloves removed, fingers stinging, Hana threaded a length of fishing line through the jagged rim. They fastened the can beneath the vacant frame, nudging it so any stirring air might knock it against wood. She glided back as though the surface were glass newly poured, cautious and deliberate while they listened for a first note.

Minutes passed; powdery snow drifted sideways and touched the can without coaxing even a click. Amos offered a small shrug, yet his gaze lingered on the mute contraption, searching for the motion that would start its voice. The lake answered with a deep groan that slid beneath their boots and recycled itself into softer echoes among the birches. Hana stepped to shore, blades scraping frost; behind her, the empty frame and reluctant can hung silver-dull against granite. A final gull skimmed the horizon while the improvised bell refused to move atop the still frame. Cold crept through her laces, stayed there, and that lingering chill carried back across the water long after they walked away.

她剛踏上冰面，阿莫斯便滑近並在碎冰發出的嘶聲中停下。雙臂畫著迅速而尖銳的弧線，他以這些動作替補缺失的聲響。動作之後是一道輕聲：「不見了，對吧？」話語在她冰刀前止步。她想說明哪裡不同，舌頭卻因寒意僵住，只能再度用手套指向那沉默的框。頭頂一隻海鷗盤旋，沙啞的鳴叫順著昔日搖鈴的同一陣風滑走。她的左腳停住、冰刀半轉，好像冰面在問她是否仍相信這份靜默。

湖邊一塊斜靠巨石的生鏽罐頭成了他們的材料。阿莫斯撿起它，扭曲的鐵絲把手僵硬如冰；原本說好回收的破片，如今被臨時徵用。哈娜脫下手套，讓刺痛的手指把釣線穿過鋸齒般的罐口。他們把罐子綁在空木框下，調整角度，好讓任何細微氣流都能敲擊木頭。她退後滑行，彷彿腳下是剛澆出的玻璃，動作小心、慢而聆聽第一響。

時間流逝，細雪橫飄，拍到罐子卻連一下聲都逼不出來。阿莫斯聳了聳肩，依然盯著那啞鈴，等待它啟聲的動作。湖面回以深沉呻吟，從他們腳下掠過，轉成更柔和的迴聲散進白樺林。哈娜踏上岸，冰刀刮著薄霜；身後，空木框與勉強掛著的罐子在花崗岩前一動不動地泛著暗銀。遠方最後一隻海鷗掠過地平線，而那臨時的鈴鐺依舊靜默於框上。寒意透過鞋帶鑽入腳背，久久不散，隨著他們走遠，沿著水面又緩緩傳回。
