Greta’s boot left the last granite slab and pressed onto the lake’s glassy skin. Morning light slid through a ragged break in the clouds, throwing a sustained amber shimmer across the flat expanse. Her steps creaked, each sound travelling outward beneath her soles like a low drum, answering the birch branches that clicked together above the shore. She had crossed this stretch of ice all winter, yet the brightness today edged every scratch and bubble with silver, as though the surface had been freshly forged overnight. A thin flag staked by the watcher on shore marked the line she never passed; keeping to it, she loosened her shoulders and let her skates bite. The first push carried her toward the lake’s pale centre.
Miles stood beside the flag, steadying a small wooden sled whose runners glittered with frost. He tugged at the leather strap, testing the tension, then rubbed a palm over the metal until breath fogged above it, a minor routine repeated so often it filled only a fraction of his attention. A brittle vexation of sound rose somewhere under the ice, between a groan and a chime, and he tilted his head. “Hear that?” The note faded and the cold settled again, a quiet that felt like the season holding its breath in deferment of spring. He nodded once, glanced toward Greta—her silhouette already narrowing into the glare—and began to pull the sled parallel to her course.
Midway across, Greta slowed. A faint serpentine scratch lay ahead, one she had skimmed over many times without thought. Today the low sun caught it obliquely; light refracted along its shallow groove, turning the mark into a line of quicksilver. She drew alongside, crouched, and traced the groove with a glove, noticing that its curve matched the arc she and Miles once practised for sharp turns. For a moment she stood still, blades planted, listening as another deep tone rolled underfoot, quieter yet longer. She rose, checked the angle again, then pushed back toward the flag, her strides measured, her eyes flicking from the shining curve to Miles’s approaching sled. At the boundary she clicked her guards onto the steel and stepped onto stone.
The flagged pole stood upright in the shallow snow ridge, its bright cloth quivering against the muted expanse, while the sled rested beside it, runners leaving twin dark lines that glimmered where frost had been rubbed away. Across the ice, the serpentine scratch caught the sinking light once more, a silver filament stretching toward the centre before vanishing beneath soft shadows cast by drifting birch branches. Between flag and filament, two fresh sets of boot prints deepened the powder along the granite edge, their sharp outlines already softening as the cold air settled, sealing the surface in renewed silence.
Translation
