“Who left the stoking poker on the sill?” Glen’s voice drifted past the kiln wall, and Atlas blinked at the gleaming metal rod lying horizontal where it had never lain before. Seldom had the shed felt so altered: the heat still pressed against his forearms, yet the small misplacement tugged at every earlier visit.
He crouched, setting his basket of unfired cups beside the bench. A faint footprint, half-printed in the grey ash, pointed toward the stack of shelving; a thin fissure zigzagged across the top plank, and a gilt birdcage—its wire ribbing sugared with dust—hung at an unfamiliar angle, as though the hook had twisted overnight. Yesterday the cage had served only as decoration for glaze tests, empty but steady; now it shivered whenever a draft slipped through the doorway. Atlas brushed one finger along the tarnished rim, tiny flakes catching light like mica. The kiln exhaled; orange ripples pulsed through the viewing slit, and a new log split with a muted crack.
Glen emerged, arms full of split oak. His stride slowed, boots scuffing the floor once the scattered embers came into view. All he could measure was the hush between two soft hisses from the firebox. Logs settled onto the rack, each piece aligned with almost ceremonial precision—a gesture, perhaps, to make amends for the untidied pile he had abandoned yesterday. Atlas started to lift the poker, paused, then shifted it upright instead, the iron tip sliding into its usual groove. Their eyes met only a breath longer than necessary; no word passed. Beyond the shed, a single hectare of orchard shimmered under late light, leaves unmoving in the kiln’s dry downdraft.
The two stepped back from the glowing arch. Ash unsettled, Atlas’ palms opened, and the suspended cage sang a brief metallic note. Only then did he notice the shadow it threw upon the brick: bars crossing bars, an intricate grid that overlaid the kiln mouth exactly, as if it had always framed the fire. He released a slow exhale, turned toward the path, and the birdcage kept trembling in the rising heat while the world outside remained still.
Translation
