English Original
Atlas slid a narrow branch under the half-burnt log and watched the ember bed brighten each time it rose. Fire and air shared a hidden hinge, opening and closing in a cadence that matched his slow breathing. Kneeling inside the ring of stones, he measured heat with alternating palms: one warming, one cooled by night air. Beyond the flicker, a shallow glen spread toward the black mouth of a canyon, but the outer world stayed invisible. He guided three forked twigs together, their points touching above the coals, and the tiny tripod began to assemble itself.
A sharp snap scattered sparks when resin inside a buried knot burst without warning. Orange flecks landed on a wool blanket near Ives, and Atlas lunged, beating them out with the back of his sleeve. “That one bit hard,” Ives said, rubbing his arm while stray smoke curled between them in uneven pulses. Atlas shook ash from his cuff, then carried the blanket to the dew-soaked grass at camp’s edge, far from the ring. During those few heartbeats the fire drummed on without him, its logs settling into a rhythm he could no longer read by skin.
When he returned to the stones, the cadence of heat had already changed around the circle. The log he had levered earlier now lay flat, and the ember ridge had slumped into a dull crimson mound. Sparks that once rallied together in dense constellations drifted apart, shrinking into lonely pinpoints along the ash. Atlas paused, hand hovering over the charred branch he had left, then reached instead for a sturdier limb from the pile. He angled the thicker piece beneath the mound, coaxing oxygen through the powdery crust, and the response rose slower yet deeper.
Iris leaned forward, voice low, letting the firelight strobe across her cheek in brief measured flashes. “Will it hold?” she asked, the question arriving between two quiet pops from the settling wood. Atlas nodded, aligning splinters like clock hands before pressing them into a triangular brace. He began to construct the rack again, yet the fire’s tempo no longer hurried him, granting a full ember sigh between moves. Repeating his first motion, he eased the thicker limb under the log and tilted it forward by a single quiet finger-width.
Translation
