English Original
The oil can lay on its side beneath the weight drum; Grey blinked at it, the question unspoken in the ticking hush. Whenever he climbed the clock tower, every tool sat upright on the shelf, brass nozzles aligned like disciplined soldiers. He lifted the can, noting a ring of oil seeping into the stone, then began his inspection, certain nothing else had shifted. His heuristic stayed simple: any gear duller than coin bronze got oil, any pivot colder than his wrist earned a key twist. The first wheel spun with expected ease, and his shoulders lowered as if weighted straps had slipped free.
Along the next beam, a fine fissure radiated from a bolt head, and metal filings glittered like garnish on a plate. Dust stripes shaped by the pendulum’s breath lay thicker than last month, each band another minute embalmed in grey. The click of the escape wheel rose into a miniature crescendo, not louder, but sharper, as though the mechanism spoke through clenched teeth. Only then did he notice a smear of fresh grease on the ladder rung toward the bell loft, brighter than older stains. He wiped it with his glove, the smear leaving a dark streak across the leather.
Boot heel lifted, he paused; a faint scrabble rose behind the weights, a sound once blamed on settling stone. Were the chamber empty, the noise would have vanished under the gears, yet it repeated, soft and insistent. Grey slid the lamp into the gap, its beam catching an intricate tangle of nesting threads and brass shavings. A small ferret burst out, whiskers streaked with oil, eyes bright as polished rivets. The creature darted across the floor, scattering filings, then slipped through a wedge below the window where mortar had fallen away. Tiny paw prints, dark and recent, linked the toppled can, the grease smear, and the filings that had puzzled him.
Certainty dissolved; the tower no longer felt static, but inhabited, its quiet routines carrying secrets as light as fur and as quick. He set a shallow dish of water beside the wall and returned tools to the shelf, leaving the can upright yet uncapped. All he could do now was listen, the tick crowding every corner while the sunlight swiveled across the gears. Behind him the meshing teeth produced a lighter note today, a change he chose not to measure. When the minute hand above nudged forward, Grey descended the stair, a single paw print still gleaming near the threshold.
