Grant fed the rough twine through the small brass pulley above the gazebo rail. Drops clung to the cool metal after the brief shower, and the damp wood under his palms pressed grit against his skin. He planned to raise a shallow tin planter, loosen a thumbtack from its underside, and pin his newest doodle—a quick bluebird sketched with waxy crayon—to the noticeboard before more rain arrived. A gust slapped loose gravel along the path; imagination turned the shifting shapes into tiny sails skimming stone slabs, yet the real task needed steadier hands. A resourceful arrangement of sticks propped the planter’s base, but one stick wobbled each time the rope tightened, threatening to send the small load sideways.

Grant eased the twine; the planter lifted, slid, and knocked the fragile support outward. The freed stick struck a row of glassy pebbles scattered earlier by children, sending them rolling across the wet paving toward the pond rail. One pebble grazed the bench leg, bumped a half-empty bottle, and the bottle toppled with a muted thud. Water trickled from its mouth, crept over the sloped stone, and touched crumbs beneath the seat. A bluebird perched nearby sprang upward as the bottle brushed its tail feathers, spraying droplets onto Grant’s sketch pad resting open on the bench. The page darkened in blotches, and its curled corner caught the fresh wind, beginning a slow, fluttering escape.

Grant jerked the rope downward; the planter descended and pressed against the noticeboard, halting further sway. The rope, now slack, dragged the soaked sketch pad back onto the bench surface, trapping it under its damp fibers. Shadows deepened while a light spray tapped the floorboards. Grant retrieved the loosened thumbtack from the planter’s rim and pinned the spotted drawing where passers-by could still see it. The page that had been smooth now bowed outward, and its wet upper edge fluttered against the board in jerky, uneven beats toward the darkening path.
