"The barrel is loose."
Seth shifted his weight to avoid knocking the wooden planter that sat beside the gravel path. Earlier that morning, he had packed his charcoal sticks and folded stool, planning to sketch the faded carving on the planter’s rim before the light changed. His knees bent as he lowered the stool, and gravel pressed through the soles of his shoes. Across the pond, the slow embarkation of rented rowboats had been paused; paddles lay still while attendants stacked life jackets. Seth braced his forearm against the stool and opened his sketchbook. The first lines flowed, but a gust arrived from the open water, lifting one corner of the page and spraying tiny droplets from the fountain onto the fresh charcoal. He waited for the page to still, then pressed his palm flat, hoping the moisture would slide away instead of soaking in.
Clouds drifted in, darker and lower, and the temperature dropped enough to stiffen his shoulders. Drizzle tapped on the planter lip, then peppered the page. Seth held the sheet down with his thumb, yet the fine rain continued. He counted the rhythm of drops; when the interval widened, he moved the pencil in quick strokes, stopping each time water returned. The timing helped, but new drops merged into faint stains. Nearby, Rosa, an educator enjoying her day off, closed her umbrella and watched. She kept her hands folded and did not intervene; her posture stayed composed as steam rose from her coffee cup. Another gust drove spray straight under the tree canopy, forcing Seth to rise. He jammed the stool under one arm and jogged toward the gazebo, knees lifting high over the slick gravel.
Every seat beneath the roof was already taken, and wet jackets draped over the railing. Seth hovered at the entrance, shifting weight from heel to toe. If the drizzle returned, he would stay exposed, yet moving deeper required space. Bea noticed his dripping sketchbook; she eased sideways, creating a narrow gap. Their elbows brushed, and a quick handshake confirmed the shared corner. Seth angled his stool between two support posts and waited through one long breath until the breeze paused. During that single, still heartbeat he reopened the book and finished the final lines before droplets resumed. Papers rustled, benches creaked, and a thin hiss of dripping water persisted beneath the wooden ceiling.
