A sharp metallic clang rebounded off the tiled walls; what had struck the railing beside Cal? He traced the echo and spotted an empty anchovy can rolling in a slow circle near the yellow safety line. The timetable display hummed through its minute-long loop, announcing the route nine bus due to depart in three minutes. Cal’s heart-racing pace shifted into an urgent trot toward the ticket gate. He intended to reach the upper-deck window seat before the crowd could mingle around it. The fare reader flashed red and emitted a flat buzz. His card carried too little credit. To top up, he crossed the entrance hall toward the humming machine.
Footsteps rattled across the tiles behind him; Faye emerged from the waiting shelter clutching her own card. She caught the rhythm of his jog and matched it. Cal had to admit the soft whir of the recharge machine felt longer than its ten-second cycle. Coins clinked, the card slid in, and the machine returned a faint beep of success. Yet, as they spun back, the overhead speaker crackled: the route nine bay had shifted to platform B after a mechanical inspection. The announcement rippled along the concrete ceiling; every suitcase wheel answered with a scratchy rush toward the footbridge. Cal did not confess that a fresh fifteen-minute gap loomed if they moved too slowly. Instead, he pointed toward the metal stairs already ringing with hurried shoes.
The pair pounded upward, each tread thudding against hollow steel panels that sent vibrations downward like distant drums. Halfway across the glass-sided bridge, a sudden gust funneled through, pushing a swirl of litter that slapped against the panes. Faye’s scarf fluttered, snagging on a railing bracket; fabric rasped while she freed it. By the time they reached platform B, the bus released a pneumatic hiss and glided away, its rear lights blinking in steady rhythm. Silence lingered only for a breath before the vending machine beside them broke into a jaunty melody, its motor preparing to drop a bottle someone had paid for earlier. On the floor above, a second melody from the coffee kiosk began its own tinny chorus, echoing the unclaimed bottle below.
Translation
