The ticket gate’s light flashed crimson and froze. What had drained the balance on Uma’s pass? She stepped back, hip brushing the rigid bar that refused to move. Ruby, sitting near the footbridge stairs, lifted one earphone but stayed on the cold bench. A pungent mix of diesel and rubber drifted up from the vehicle bay below, squeezing their lungs with every breath. Uma spotted the lone recharge machine beside a brightly lit retail kiosk that sold notebooks and sweets. Her goal was clear: drop two coins and reach the platform before the countdown reached zero. She jogged across the tiles, ankles flexing to avoid a damp patch, and slid the first coin toward the narrow slot.
Metal scraped inside, yet the screen still showed the same amount; the coin seemed to lurk somewhere behind the panel. Uma clenched the next coin between thumb and forefinger, angled it flatter, and pushed again. A dull clunk followed, but the balance refused to change. She had already slipped three coins, so she pressed her palm against the cool casing and tried to pry one coin free with a fingernail. It would not move. If the machine jammed again, they would miss the departing bus now three minutes away. Ruby stood, shifting weight from heel to heel at the gate. Uma adjusted her stance, shoulders low and wrist straighter, and guided the fourth coin through in one steady motion. The digits jumped at last.
She dashed back, lungs pumping, tapped the pass, and the bar rotated under her hip without resistance. The moment they reached the platform, an algorithm inside the overhead display reordered the schedule, sending their route to the far side beyond the footbridge. A brief wind curled through the glass panels as they turned, but the bus itself had not yet arrived, so their sprint halted halfway. Uma exhaled, calves vibrating from the sudden stop, while Ruby laughed and pointed at the cause. Nearby, unattended coffee cups rattled on the bench. A pigeon hopped onto the yellow line and pecked at a loose crumb before fluttering toward the opposite platform.
Translation
